If you are a perfectionist, you probably will not like this item.  If you are simply a lover of children's unique vintage fashion pieces like us, you will love it.   This is a precious shell pink, pure silk bonnet with lace inserts, custom made for a little girl.  It is from Best & Co.'s Liliputian Bazaar and was made in France.  Beautifully detailed with meticulously done shirring of the silk and with lace inserts covering the shell of the hat. The rim is covered in silk and the long silk chin ties are original. Each chin tie has a wide band of shirred silk to match the bonnet's cover.  The lining is the same silk that covers the rim and the crown.  The hat shows only some subtle wear, although the silk chin ties are delicate and will split if not handled gently. The worst of the hat is a soil spot on one of the lace inserts, about 1/2" X 3/4". This looks like it can be processed out. The lining of the hat is in good condition. The label is original. The hat has a 20" interior circumference and stands about 4 1/2" high at the crown center.

The hat comes with its original hat box covered entirely in silk, also in pale shell pink.  The silk is hand painted with hand embroidered detail.  A remarkable hat box, it is structurally good.  However, the silk coverings on both the box body and the lid are shattering.  The painted and embroidered pictures are, thankfully, still in good shape.  The hat box measures 11" in diameter and stands 8" high.

A note about Best & Co.:  founded in 1879 by Albert Best. And it was the best.  The upper social strata shopped there religiously, throughout the 19th century and into the mid-2oth. The company was known for its "tastefully styled and proper women's clothes and its sturdy children's wear."  The Christmas shopping scene from the first Godfather movie was set in front of the Best & Co. store in NYC.

Finding this rare treasure was exciting for us here at Home Farm.  We hope you enjoy reading about it.
