Something you don't come across every day ~ an eglomise pin keep. Each side is an early miniature reverse painting on glass.  One side of the keep shows Ryde, Isle of Wight. Ryde is a village in England, dating to c1300. The town fell to the French in the 14th century and had a hard time of it until Queen Victorian purchased her royal summer residence in that area in 1845. That turned the tide for Ryde. The opposite side of the pin keep has a miniature painting of Carisbrooke Castle, also on the Isle of Wight. The castle has traces of occupancy dating back to pre-Roman times. The pin keep's paintings are oils and also involve foil, giving a beautiful glisten to the background on each side.

The two sides of the keep are joined by the velvet covered cushion that holds the line of pins. 1 7/8" diameter; 3/8" thick. The paintings are in outstanding condition. The velvet shows its age with loss of nap, visible in the photos. A rare treasure for your sewing collection, and a treat for those who collect miniature works of art.
