Georgian Ring 15kt Gold, Amethyst c1820
An unusual, very early antique gold ring dating to c1820. It is solid 15kt gold set with a bright foiled amethyst. The ring is entirely original and in extremely good condition.
The amethyst measures 6mm X 4.2mm. As mentioned, the gemstone is foiled. The foiling of gemstones was a practice dating back to about 2000-1600 BCE. Pliny wrote about it in the 1st century A.D. During the Georgian Period, foiling was the surface enhancement process with the most allure. Either a gold or a non-metallic reflective sheet would be painted on the gem's back to enhance its natural color and glitter.
What we love most about this ring is its distinctive shoulders. Each has an applied highlight, with fabulous textured leaves spreading out like wings. American size 5, UK size J, Japanese size 9
Please don't shy away because of this ring's advanced age. It was made to last forever and a day. You can wear it in complete confidence. It displays beautifully, too. Free USPS Priority shipping for USA addresses.
