Large Cameo, Shell in 14kt Gold c1860 Phaeton, Son of Greek God Helios
A magnificent shell cameo, oversized, framed in 14kt yellow gold. The subject is Phaeton, son of Helios, Greek god of the son. This cameo was done after the marble relief executed by artist John Gibson RA (1790-1866), for Earl Fitzwillliam. The composition is one of a pair, its companion piece was 'The Hours leading the Horses of the Sun'. The artist who carved this cameo did so effectively and sensitively, in keeping with the work done so beautifully by Gibson. The carving of the figures is perfectly preserved with no imperfections. The shell itself shows stress marks that are stable. You can wear this distinctive, fabulous cameo as often as you like in complete confidence. Shipping, handling and insurance are all on us.
