Jacques Reich (1852-1923) was a portrait etcher, born in Hungary and mainly active in the United States. He studied in New York and Philadelphia. In Paris, France, he studied under noted painters William-Adolphe Bouguereau and Joseph Nicolas Robert-Fleury. In 1880 Reich returned to America; in the early 1890s, he turned to etchings on copper and specialized in this field for over a quarter of a century. His series of famous Americans included about 25 subjects. The original of this particular engraving is in the archives of the Smithsonian American Art Museum. In very fine, original condition.
