The Cherub Bacchanal Brooch * Shell Cameo in a Silver and Marcasite Mount c1850
We love the very early original cameos. The story-tellers are our favorites ~ we've had quite a few wonderful ones. And the Cherub Bacchanal is among the very best, the very finest, the most beautifully carved, the most entertaining and by far, the most intriguing! The cameo carved vignette portrays mischievous little cherubs who have gotten into barrels of wine and they are making a grand time of it.
Mounted in solid silver set with a row of glittering marcasites, the natural shell cameo was finely hand carved to depict this bacchanalian cherub scene. On the back, the shell is faintly signed Monticelli, who would have been the master carver. The original safety chain is still attached, an element that increases the desirability of this piece. In very, very fine condition. The pin clasp is an old replacement; this is of no consequence in a cameo of this caliber. Aside from this early replacement, the brooch is all original. A beautiful patina has developed, and there are no problems to the cameo or its frame at all. Measures a shade over 2" wide and a shade under 1 7/8" tall. Approximate weight is 17gms. This is a fantastic early cameo with a highly unusual theme.
