Zouave Tunic Dress for a Boy c1865
A darling c1865 tunic or dress for a child. The dropped shoulders and neck design tell us this was made for a boy, although it may have been worn by a girl, as well. The fabric is substantial cotton printed in red, cream and buff stripes ~ the sort of pattern that makes the fabric appear always fresh and smart. Brick-red zouave-style collar, yoke and turned back cuffs are all trimmed with white, tiny scale rick-rack which is very dear. Center front, a decorative piped, angled line runs down the length. A single wide box pleat on either side of the front adds to the appeal of this dress. Back closure buttons go all the way to the hem, hidden by a placket. The shoulders are cartridge pleated for fullness. Condition is very, very good. There is a slight fade to the piping in front. The buttons are all present, secure and matching; they may be replacements. There are no stains, holes, rips or tears or musty odors. This is a little dream dress that would hold up to a youngster wearing it, with some care, today. Made to be worn full and loose. Chest 30"; waist & hips full; shoulder to hem 25"; shoulder to shoulder 11 5/8"; sleeve length from shoulder seam to sleeve hem 13 1/2"; around neck 12 1/4".
