Details
The late '40s growth of America's Victorian Revival was enhanced by the arts. Cinema, such as Vincente Minnelli's Madame Bovary and Victor Fleming's Gone With the Wind, displayed in detail the Victorian love of art in jewelry, fashion and decor. The 1970s saw a strong resurgence of Victorian Revival, inspired by the detailed sets and wardrobes in works such as Ivory/Merchant's Howard's End, and Julian Fellowes' Belgravia. Pieces from those former Victorian Revival periods have caught the eyes and hearts of current collectors with a division of Victorian style jewelry and clothing that is, today, turning antique within its own right. Here we have a remarkable chatelaine brooch made of sterling silver, dating to mid-20th century. Art Nouveau influenced scrolls and flourishes swirl around the head of a cherub. This scalloped-edged brooch has three chains dangling down. A hook hangs from the bottom of each chain, ready to hold a mechanical pencil, small embroidery scissors, thimble, notepad or whatever small piece there was to complete the duties of the Victorian day. Today, the chains would hold decorative rather than serviceable bits and bobs, such as fobs and small magnifiers. This is a sterling silver piece gracefully designed and impeccably rendered. Condition is excellent. Hand-work is visible in the back, adding interest to the surface. Marked 925 for sterling silver. The brooch has mild tarnish. If you'd prefer original shine to its present patina, a gentle polish will do the trick. I don't as a practice polish silver, as there are those who prefer it showing its age in this way. The brooch itself is 1 3/4"W X 1 3/8"W. Each side hooked chain is 2 1/4" long. The middle chain dangles down about 3 3/8". Your brooch will be delivered to you in a nice gift box. Questions?
