Vintage Bonnet Swiss Folk Fashion by Andres & Hurbin

  • Swiss Folk Costume Bonnet in Velvet

An enchanting vintage bonnet from the Swiss company Andres & Hurbin, Trachten - Costumes, in Bern, capital of Switzerland.  With its oversized net ruffle, its follow-me-lads ribbons  and its scarlet lining, I call it the Merry Widow bonnet.

The form of the bonnet is such that in its profile, you’ll see a high over-the-forehead front tilting itself into a downward slope.  This is interesting and unusual.  Made early in the 20th century, this bonnet would have been worn with a Swiss or Swiss German folk costume ensemble.  Not the usual thing we offer, but the design is so exact, the quality of the fabrics so fine and the condition is so good, how could we resist?  Cap is cotton velvet, used for its durability; chin ties and the very charming ribbons down the back are peau d’soie. The lining is a soft cotton with a smooth, almost felted texture.  And it is as red as can be! The winning feature, however, is the net ruffle around the face.  It is a good 5+ inches wide!  It feels like it’s made of horsehair, although it may be a heavily treated veil netting.  The cap is sized for an adult with an average head.   All is in very nice condition.  Only the net ruffle shoes any age and normal use in a very few small imperfections to the net.  USA shipping, handling and insurance is on us.
